SCIENTIFIC NAME:   Ocimum basilicum

DESCRIPTION / PART USED:   A sprig of basil in the wardrobe will keep moths and other insects at bay. Basil is a good companion to tomatoes; dislikes rue intensely. Improves growth and flavor. Repels flies and mosquitoes. 

The dried leaf imparts a spicy, mildly sweet flavor reminiscent of clover and anise..

PRECAUTIONS:

Basil might be UNSAFE when used long-term. It contains estragole, a chemical that might increase the risk of getting liver cancer.  Basil seems to be safe for pregnant and breast-feeding women in food amounts.
